What a Veritas Review actually looks like
Most manuscript feedback asks you to take the reviewer's word for it. We show our work.
When you're trusting someone with your manuscript, you deserve to know what you're getting. So here's an excerpt from a real review we produced of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" (public domain).
The narrative opens with a devastating pestilence known as the Red Death, characterized by sharp pains, sudden dizziness, bleeding at the pores, and death within half an hour, prompting Prince Prospero to summon a thousand friends to a secure, castellated abbey. By welding the bolts of the iron gates and retreating from the Red Death, the courtiers set the stage for a haunting tale where the hourly striking of the ebony clock continually disrupts their gaiety, culminating in the unsettling appearance of a masked figure.
The writing effectively compartmentalizes its atmospheric elements, utilizing the castellated abbey and the striking ebony clock to create an immersive environment during the magnificent masked ball hosted five or six months into their seclusion. This provides strong atmospheric world-building through the creation of a secure, hermetic setting and striking environmental details like the seven rooms and the ebony clock.
Prince Prospero is depicted as a bold, eccentric ruler who seeks to defy mortality through isolation and aesthetic distraction, contrasting with the nameless, terrifying masked stranger who appears at midnight. The narrative builds tension methodically from the external plague to the internal seclusion, punctuated by the regular hourly interruptions of the ebony clock leading to the climax at midnight when the music and waltzers cease.
What makes this different
Notice what you don't see:
- No "this is amazing!" or "needs work!" without specifics
- No vague writing advice that could apply to any book
- No summary of the plot you already know
Every observation is tied to specific passages in your manuscript. When we say something works, we show you the passage that proves it. When we identify a weakness, we tell you exactly where it is and why it matters.
That's the Veritas standard. Evidence, not vibes.
